P5 visit the Ulster American Folk Park
We had a wonderful day at the Ulster American Folk Park today. Stepping back in time to the 1800s, we learned about life before and during the Potato Famine. We explored a traditional one-room cottage, experienced what a typical day in a local schoolhouse would have been like, and worked together to decide which individuals would receive a free ticket to sail to America.
One of the highlights was exploring a replica “coffin ship” and gaining a real insight into the hardships faced by emigrants on their journey. We then visited the fantastic Under the Hawthorn Tree exhibition, which brought the story to life in a truly engaging way.
A picnic lunch in the sunshine was the perfect way to finish the day. It was certainly a long day of travelling, but seeing the children's enthusiasm, engagement and curiosity made every mile worthwhile. We are so proud of how they represented our school and embraced every part of this memorable learning experience
