P5 - Newry ‘Workhouse’

18th Nov 2025
Today, P5 travelled back in time to the 19th century when they became inmates of the workhouse. They listened to stories about the famine years and then entered the schoolroom of the workhouse. The Master explained the rules and then set them arithmetic and writing exercises. The girls learned how to do a running stitch in sewing and the boys were set to work, picking oakum. A great day where the children got to share with the staff all their learning about The Great Irish famine so far, and explore some of the genuine artefacts in the museum. No day out would be complete, without a trip to the park on the way home. 😁
