P4/5 Visit to Down Museum

12th Nov 2019

We all enjoyed a visit to the Down Museum to learn more about life during the famine years.

Our host Linda talked about the reoccurrence of the Blight for three years running and explained how many people were forced to go to their nearest workhouse. In the ‘workhouse’, the children took part in many activities/jobs, including oakum picking and laundry and they also did some writing on slate boards using a slate pencil.

Next, the children dressed up as landowners, tenant farmers, workhouse staff and paupers and some children took on the role of reporters for the local newspapers reporting the latest on the famine.

Finally, the children wrote poems about the famine. A great day had by all.
