The children had lots of fun during Play Based Learning, each week they have had a different focus based on the topic ‘People who help us’. Fire and rescue services called out to extinguish a kitchen fire. The Jolly Postman delivered the cards and letters that were produced at the writing station. The children created wonderful constructions of post offices with different devices for transporting parcels for delivery, as well as many more topic related activities. This week Cosy Cottage and Swiper the fox came down with a bad case of flu. Luckily, our focus was the Medical Service. The children phoned the doctor and nurse to tend to those who were feeling poorly. The Optician was on hand to check eye health and ensure that the patients knew the letter names and sounds on the eye test cards. The Health Visitor ensured that the babies were staying healthy by weighing them using non standard units of measurement and recording their weight. Stations were set up to fill test tubes with tablets in different sequences. Vials of medicine/ water were measured out using a variety of sizes of syringes. The children had to count and record how many syringes it took to fill each vial and compare their findings. A wonderful hospital was constructed from Lego with a Helipad included, cleverly marked with a ‘H’ for the air ambulance. The children’s numeracy topics of measure and money numeracy proved to be useful as friends of the children who were feeling poorly went to the shop to buy groceries and goodies to cheer them up. Most importantly though, the P1 & 2 children learnt lots whilst having lots of fun!!!!! 😃
